Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “I gave birth to him in pain.”   Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.    (1 Chronicles 4:9–10)

 

His prayer is in the form of a vow, and seems to have been uttered when he was entering on an important or critical service, for the successful execution of which he placed no confidence in his own abilities, but rather looked to God to supply his blessings.

 

God answered his prayer and granted him that which he requested.  Jabez enjoyed a remarkable degree of prosperity, and God, in this instance, proved that He was not only the hearer, but the answerer of prayer.
